About Pansy Shells

Pansy shells are classified under the order Clypeasteroida within the class Echinoidea. These fascinating marine animals are characterized by radial symmetry, often displaying a five-part body plan, and a hard, spiny structure.

Despite their name, pansy shells are not shells at all - they are the fragile skeletons of burrowing sea urchins that live in shallow, sheltered bays and estuaries.

Pansy shells are not found everywhere. They belong to specific stretches of coastline along the south coast of South Africa, extending up to Mozambique, the most significant in South Africa being the Breede River estuary and Witsand, Still Bay, Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay. For those who grew up near them or spent meaningful time by these shores, they hold deep personal significance.

Because real pansy shells are rare and extremely brittle, Pansy Shell Creations was designed so you can enjoy and share their beauty every day - without harming nature.

About Our Story

Some treasures stay with you for a lifetime.

For us, the pansy shell is one of them.

Our passion for pansy shells began more than fifty years ago at the Breede River Estuary, where childhood days were spent exploring sandbanks and tidal pools, searching for these delicate coastal treasures. Finding one was never easy - each discovery felt like a small triumph, a quiet moment of joy earned through patience and time spent so close to the sea.

That sense of wonder never left.

Today, we are still drawn to these waters, where nothing brings us greater peace and tranquility than slowly “patrolling” the sandbanks and shallow - and sometimes unexpectedly deep - tidal channel pools between them. It is a place of stillness, reflection, and connection, where the rhythm of the water feels both familiar and grounding.

Pansy Shell Creations grew from this lifelong connection. Because real pansy shells are rare and extremely fragile, the brand was created to honour their beauty without taking from nature. What began as simple, roughly moulded designs has evolved into today’s refined charms inspired by the natural symmetry and quiet elegance of the pansy shell.

Our creations are inspired by this rare connection - designed for those who understand that the sea is not just a place, but a feeling.

For those who know this shore, it means everything.
